Walking Ghosts
E.W. Richardson |
Many came back
alive on the outside,
but within, something is lost,
something has died.
Their eyes are hollow,
leading deep inside
to memories buried deep
in chambers and vaults
where few dare walk.
A fellow vet,
or one whose heart
who can face the horrors
of the dogs of war
can look into those caverns
and understand...
that these walking ghosts
of young men and women
rarely speak of what they experienced,
nor of the fact
that they relive it all
each day and in the darkness
of sleepless nights.
