Last night as I drove alone
Darkness a quiet shroud
The sound of tires on gravel
In the stillness
A sound quite loud
I saw the moon arising
It's beautiful light surprising
And I found myself surmising
Of what it is you do.
By "what", I mean,
To me
For it is truly plain to see
That there is more
To this score
Than mere simple harmony.
At times the powerful fanfare
Trumpets loud and true
Or the longing whisper
Of the cello
When hearts are feeling blue.
The soft sweet cries
The gentle sighs
Of violins and harps
Make way for the sound
That my heart needs found
A small but wanted need
The gentle tremble
The caressing touch
Of a lost and lonely reed.
Play for me
The symphony
And let our hearts remain
Forever here
Between laugh and tear
Our musical refrain.
