Paper Dolls
Christopher Garrett |
Silhouetted in candlelight
The small paper shapes dance,
Casting black shadows against the white walls
Illuminated by a solitary candle.
I stare into the flame and watch it dance
And flicker in the darkness.
In the darkness
I'm alone.
My hand droops slightly
And a paper boot touches
The orange cone.
I watch sadly as my little soldiers
Turn to nought but ash and smoke
And wonder why.
Surely it isn't fair that my
Little soldiers should turn to dust.
I guess there'll always be more paper,
More soldiers to come in their place.
