Remembering The Sixties
Betty Hattersley

I couldn't wait to start my job after leaving school,
a shop assistant I became, I really felt quite cool.
I put on lots of makeup and backcombed all my hair,
sprayed it stiff with lacquer and didn't have a care.

With my buffon hairdo, eyeliner nice and thick,
I used to wear pale lipstick, I really looked quite sick.
But I thought I looked so brilliant, fashion was the key,
dressed in all the latest gear for all the world to see.

The Beatles was the sound we heard, dancing, having fun,
a coach trip off to Blackpool, a weekend in the sun.
Stiletto heels were smashing, with great long pointed toes,
a massive handbag on your arm, we really loved to pose.

Flower power was a trend, to advertise world peace,
shirts in many colours, a waistcoat made of fleece.
They offered you a flower and quoted "peace to man",
I sometimes think about them now, what a smashing plan.

Records was the thing back then, expresso coffee to,
we used to meet inside a cafe, a gathering of our crew.
Motorbikes and scooters, mods and rockers style,
a boy would send you in a whirl, just with a friendly smile.

I wore those stick out underskirts, with wire around the hem,
I couldn't sit down properly, hard to handle them.
Either rinsed in sugar water or starch if you were rich,
they used to stick onto your legs and make you want to itch.

What a brilliant time this era was, every day was great,
looking forward to the fun, going out to meet your mate.
I loved the swinging sixties, the times and people then,
the girls are all grown up now, the boys that was, are men.

Now I have grown older, I think about time passed,
your teens are really precious years, they fly by very fast.
