Life In The Cradle Of Civilization
Hillol Ray

Over the last three billion years, at least a billion species
Were formed out of a same mode-
And the traits are too many that have set all the tales
Of neuroscience specifications code!
The primeval DNA may have come from the cosmos
Riding or moving on fleeting star-
Covered by the dust of meteorites, immersed
In mist or fume, and even with a deep scar!
Ancient Amazonians and Australian aborigines
Still believe that living things on Earth,
Were brought in by a tiny 'cosmic serpent'
During its collision and nurtured their birth!
Thus, all living beings are related
And all animals are relatives of same genome-
Still the researches are continuing to unveil
The mysteries lying close to home!

From time to time, many species disappear
By cataclysmic effects of misty rain,
Or by the impacts of meteorites,
While the volcanic eruptions do not end in vain!
As per latest census, about ten million species
Are now thriving on the Earth today-
While the rate of extinction is going up
And man-made impacts are aiding the decay!

According to neuroscience, the purpose of a life
Can be grouped into a Section of Three-
Repetition, Constant, and absurd Repetition
Are the hidden issues, unable to keep us free!
We, as a species, continue to fully repeat
Our past errors and evil doings, still now-a-days,
Even though enlightened men have enabled us
To create wonders, glowing under sunrays!

The conversions from a cannibalistic hunter
To a civilized man took ten thousand years-
And the progress made by this intelligent species
Deserves standing ovation and cheers!
As we review old history books or pages
And walk in our forefathers' memory lane-
We can clearly see changes brought in by the ink
That once flowed in historians' pen!
The earliest civilization appeared in Mesopotamia
Through the miraculous invention-
Of agriculture and husbandry; and the crafts of masonry
Echoed their own intention!
Cuneiform writing for the first time lay down
The record of knowledge to a new height-
While baking and brewing of beer
Added new dimensions; and habits changed overnight!
The Mesopotamians were the first
To write down their many mythological tale-
And it gave birth to most of the modern religions
To cherish with tooth and nail!

With the passage of era, I wander in awe today
And silence is taking most of my time-
To refresh my memory of atrocities
That had valued human lives as a nickel and dime!
How ironic it may appear to the silent Gods
Who are watching such cleansing call-
Of "precision bombing" via guided missiles,
And allowing the fellowmen to fall!
We jumped from spear throwing to the wonders
Of electronics gadgetry and warfare-
But the cradle of civilization is vanishing promptly,
And nothing may be left to share!

Now as I gaze at the moonlit night
And walk back softly in my memory lane-
Tears roll down on the cheeks and ink stops
To flow in my bewildered pen!
"Never again" was the profound motto
Of holocaust sufferers that we all knew-
And those that were victims have now
Become victimizers for the global view!
At times, I ask my inner sense and feel ashamed
Of being a human and that's for sure-
'Cause man can't pay tribute to those
Who freed us via writing and science to endure!
Diligent research still continues to invent
Weapons of mass destruction on Earth-
And we can't avoid falling in the pits of evil
To get burned in the flaming hearth!
We still carry on our cannibalistic trends
And imperialism tone under the ignorant mask-
And that's a real shame on us as a human being,
And conscience should take us to task!!
