Of Lonely Sons Begotten
Stefan P. Jagoe |
Walks amid the early dew
Eire in the morning still
Abraham and Isaac, too
Green earth is theirs to till
Works the sheep and works the corn
Eire in the heat of noon
Children now and yet unborn
to see their dreams so soon
Bountiful table, beautiful mother
Eire at the close of day
Dutiful sisters and skillful brothers
Bless us Lord, we pray
Listens to the tales of ships
Eire in the occupation
Looking for the sails of ships
blowing toward the new nation
Sleeps so soundly, all is well
Eire in the black of night
Time will pass and time will tell
and take us to morning's light
Crosses the ocean, as well as himself
Eire on the starboard bow
Share Virginia's common wealth
with pruning hook, with plow
Cuts the stone and fences rise
Eire in the memory
Gaelic phrase and Spanish eyes
Remnants; history
Rests in peace, in mother earth
Eire all but forgotten
Susannah thinks of death and birth
of lonely sons begotten
