New Mexico
Kathleen Podzimek
Winds tackle and lift dust devils,
Shake Saquaro, Yucca, and Buckhorn

Scattered like dice on a Mescalero playing board
Guadaloupe mountains, framed by a parched prairie
And a turquoise sky-maze

Peak through the haze

An apache woman,
Surrounded by bright-eyed and sleeping children

Tells stories of mighty warriors, ancestors, and apparitions

Charms of silver bear claws, slithering snakes,
And turquoise beads of water

Adorn fingers and necks

Brightly-dressed Kachina dolls,
Half-animal/half-human,

Are lined-up like fuzzy toys in a pueblo

The ethereal music
Of flutes and melodic drums

Offers "buenos noches" to natives and visitors

Ah, New Mexico,
Land of mystery, mysticism, and enchantment
