The Photograph
Terri Berry

Inside the drawer
Close a sweet lilac sprig
Kept as remembrance that day
Its edges given to roundness
By many a secret caress
Its gloss worn away

The youthful face
Shadowing childhood's grasp
With slightly parted lips
Holds fast a natural smile
Readily to laugh
As well a kiss

The echo of memories
Drift softly 'bout the room
Each welcome as before
Reluctant it is slid back
Under the sweet lilac
I quietly close the drawer
