A Poem In Brown Wrapping
M. Ardnek

Couldn't see my wonder
couldn't see with sight
the depth of love and kindness
the sense of knowing right

Thought you'd seen a glimmer
of the woman just below
I thought that you could love me
somehow I thought you'd know

The burning of my passion
the places I would dare
the other senses could provide
you wanted more than what was there

One said I was a poem
but in brown wrapping bound
and you could only see with eyes
my real beauty left unfound

So off to chase the fantasies
and ego satisfied
but when removed their wrappings
no beauty realized

Their shiny perfect packages
grew emptier each day
no poems lied beneath the shells
that once swept you away

So now you're left with unwrapped toys
or have the toys left you?
when beneath sparkly packages
empty vessels' nothing true

The poem did not go unread
thoughtful mind discovered it
and read and savored every word
and found a welcome fit

So if heart's satisfaction
you chase and cannot find
look no longer with your eyes
look you, with heart and mind
