One With The Alligator
Harding Stedler
|
Outside the bustle of New Orleans,
swamp folks tame alligators
and raise their hopes on stilts.
On moonlit nights, their eyes dart
as water moccasins play
on murky bayous
between mosquitoes.
Their Cajun tunes
lilt in tufts of Spanish moss
that drape the native cypress.
I roll my windows down
across the causeway
and hum those mournful tunes,
leaving behind
a world that waits for morning,
a world that lives
in shadows of resilience.
