Untitled
Dominique Jones

Like a thief in the night
He took up cudgels
Drew his sword against the knight
And stole the rich man's jewels.
A hero in a black hat
Darts out into the milky face of night
Wearing the tarnished star
Society's brand for knowing who you are.
Hawthorne might oppose
The world's unblinking eyes
Yet Shakespeare might suppose
We are doing battle with our worst enemies,
Ourselves.
Does war scare you?
Or just awaken an honorable spirit hidden within you?
Solipsism, far from the chivalry of a knight.
The self can know nothing
but its own modifications and the self is the only existing thing.
The code of honor for the knight
Always to do what is right
His conscience leaves no room for petty theft
Time to return what is left
Of his dignity
Though a rich man, the jewels to their owner
Never again to fight the senseless, futile war.
