Black Shoes
Colette M. Friedman

Quiet, darkness, breathing, anticipation
Heart racing, pounding through my skin
Dark, barely a gleam from the back seat row
Black shoes, ready to set, tap, and go
Sweat, excitement, music about to flow
Music, rhythm starting to surge and spread
Moving, tapping rhythm dancing in my head
Feet, tapping to the beat that brought me life today
Black shoes clicking, clacking, and tapping away
Dancing, bringing a voice to the silence in the crowd
A voice in the tapping beating proudly aloud
Black shoes, talking, communicating, I am here for you
I can tap and dance to the music on cue
Fast, tapping, a conversation with woman and man
Feet moving fast, saying I can do it, yes I can
The crowd listening, black shoes directing the sounds
And a finale rushes in moving beyond rhythmic bounds
Feet tapping, pounding fast with the flow of the beat
And I can dance and belong to the music encircling my feet
And I have spoken in sounds to a cheering crowd
Fulfillment, heart racing, pounding through my skin
And it is over
Lights out, the feeling of oneness creeping in
Knowing I've come from a place I wish to go back to again
