The Saddest Thing
Roger Belton |
Sadness comes, and sadness goes,
As each of us faces our daily woes.
From debt and stress to personal health,
We each contend with problems of self.
But the saddest thing, from my point of view,
Is to be forgotten when life is through.
No worse thing can I call to mind,
Than to vanish without trace, leaving nothing behind.
None who remember, who feel grief even small;
Nothing to mark one's passing;; no, nothing at all.
No accomplishment to show a life was worthwhile,
No reason to be missed, neither frown nor smile.
To have lived one's life in such isolation
And making no mark for a whole generation
Would seem to me the saddest of events;
Leaving behind a world without my personal imprints.
