(Joseph felt low.)
The angel tried again with gentle persuasion
to calm this man, refusing to say grace:
"Can't you just see, how much at each occasion
God's blessing lies upon her lovely face?"
(Joseph perplexed)
Again his question went: " What has so changed her,
why was she so big?" The angel screamed:
"Can't you grasp God, and see, oh carpenter
the way he works?" The angel fiercely beamed:
(Joseph looked frightened.)
"The way God works? You, in your carving mood,
in your transient pride, calling Him to account?
Him, who grows leaves from the same wood ,
brings buds to swell, flowers to great amount.."
(Joseph gave in.)
With frightened eyes he stared. The angel flew away.
Joseph in thought, he shook his weathered face,
took off his worn-out cap, not knowing what to say,
swiftly knelt down and humbly he said grace.
