In Praise Of Scrooge
Roger Belton |
Ah, Christmas! That magic time of year!
Filled with surface joy, and sickening good cheer.
Everyone's expected to be extra nice & sweet,
And express happy greetings to everyone we meet.
No humbuggery can be allowed, you see;
For all must pretend we're really cheery!
The merchants have convinced us we must give and give;
And the costlier the gift, the happier we'll all live.
Spend all that money that most of us can't afford,
To prevent any disappointment and Seasonal discord.
On every corner there's another hand stretched out
Wanting more donations while we're out and about.
Help the poor, the needy, the bums and all the rest.
"Give 'til it hurts" is the giving that's always best.
So, we're in constant pain in giving every last cent,
Wondering, when all is done, where all our money went.
Folks rushing there; people hurrying here;
Buying yet another gift; living the illusion of good cheer.
"Bring back Scrooge!" is my clarion call!
Enough of all this spending in store and in mall!
Let's take a stand for sanity's sake;
And, with buying tawdry gifts make a nice, clean break.
Incur the wrath of merchants & all the charities around,
But when the season's over, we'll still be financially sound.
Give simple things, and only to those who mean the most,
Forget all the multitudes, that great unnumbered host.
Keep the Holiday a small but meaningful affair,
Loving our closest family...with them we gladly share.
