Sacred Warriors
Paul E. Berube

Searching for answers and finding new miseries,
we exist for today with little hope of tomorrow.
War torn and tattered without direction,
it's easier for me to live among the lost.

Abruptly, people become deaf when
you reach for recognition. I gave mind
and body asking for nothing but truth.
Society turned its head and became muted.

Camouflaged, encasing the colors proudly,
a constitution of morality plagues my existence.
Will this burden that haunts, ever leave
or must I bear it for eternity?

Remembering...Why can't I? This wretched
soul must have once loved and been loved.
Is this hunger and burning within, one
of righteousness or emptiness?

Eventually even life will strangle itself,
and my being shall be long forgotten.
The space I once occupied, laid claim
by another and he won't forget.

Destiny relinquished her rights. She tore
my heart and left me naked and drained.
The face of death is not a stranger
and He may become my salvation.
