Word Painters
Jackie R. Kays

Word Painters
Give me a painter of words,
an artist extraordinary, with
a poet's heart; from their
palette come color after color,
with sound, sight, depth and
meaningful words of art.

They'll paint you a picture of
Autumn bright, with a splash
of orange, persimmon yellow
and pastels of pure delight.

Summertime, with light blues,
dark greens, pink and lime,
and of morning glories on
white picket fence climb.

They'll take you back in time,
stirring old memories of yesteryear,
places, faces and old songs that
still rhyme.

A dilapidated barn, bright red paint
that's turned to weathered brown.
Thoughts of a childhood days,
swinging in that old hay loft like
a circus clown.

Love letter in the white sand,
painted there by a poet's hand.
Ships on the deep blue sea and
poems about the beauty of
a tree.

Poems of stars in the heavens
above, and of God's sweet love.
Poems about the man in the moon,
and the sadden cry of a lonely
loon.

All those bright colored times and places,
along with some dark colored scenes of
the tragedies of war, blood and sin.
All painted by a poet's magical pen.

Long live the word painters,
for they are humanity's
colorful entertainers.
