The Vet's Dream
Michael Mackinnon

Verse 1
The Roses are black and the trees are dead
The nightmare lives inside my head
The tortured souls the screams of the damned
The faces of the people who died by my hand

Verse 2
I wake every night completely drenched in sweat
A gun in my hand so desperate to forget
I can't pull the trigger and I wish I knew why
Will I always have these nightmares for the rest of my life?

Chorus
We signed up to fight for Uncle Sam
I remember daddy saying “how proud I am”
We lost the war and the body count rose
Now at night when it's quiet I hear hells wind blow

Verse 3
And every night I re-live this hell on earth
Always looking for an exit, the same futile search
A release from the torment which I nightly face
I wish Id known the price for my fall from grace

Verse 4
I was just obeying orders is the excuse I used
No-one saw the carnage on the nine o'clock news
I was proud to be serving proud to take up arms
In the hell I remember called Viet Nam

Chorus
We signed up to fight for Uncle Sam
I remember daddy saying “how proud I am”
We lost the war and the body count rose
Now at night when it's quiet I hear hells wind blow
