The Sky Is Gray, My Apartment So Small
Michael Crawford

The sky is gray, instead of blue
What am I really to do?
Do I run from here or do I walk? I don't really have a clue
And who are you?

Hours have passed and some things I left behind
That was a party I surely won't forget
Did I drop my wallet or was I being too kind?
Did I offer a loan or was it a bet?

A phone call came in, a miss from overseas
From my best friend, a friend indeed
Then came a letter from France, with a list of fees
I look out my window at my car below, it's slow so I really speed

Life is good, filled with hopes and dreams
I will leave soon for the Rhineland in time for spring
This is what I been taught, to support my distant team
I will board a jet, sit in my favorite seat, over the wing

Germany is nice in the spring time, I've been told
The cafes, wineries with the small stores
I better get there before I do get old
If I don't go as planned, I have no choice but to do my many chores

Post cards from friends arrive from time to time
Pictures of seaports, unknown travelers from afar
Maybe now I will sit and have my favorite glass of wine
Night has come so I will search for my favorite distant star

My phone rings but I really don't care
I can now smell the roses, so strong, coming through my screen
My neighbor told me just the other day, if you travel soon, please beware
I hear a faint knock on the door, then a soft voice, "miss, do you have any cream?"

I don't want to wait a week
The once soft voice hear a minute ago now shouts through my door,
"why don't you have any cream?"
I just didn't want to answer, I just don't want to speak
I would rather leave this room to sit in a room full of steam

The sun is coming out to dry the moisture from the ground up
Days of rain changes brown to green but the temperature remains is the cold
The coffee is ready, I better get a cup
I will soon be on that flight, am I so bold?

Just days from now I will board flight 594
The massive long metal tube will climb above the clouds
Leaving all I own behind, to return some other time, just like before
Some will celebrate with a loud shout

I sit in front of my fireplace for now
With cedar and fir burning, I feel the warmth of the fire
For what I have done, I will offer a gracious bow
After that, I will travel to my beach, this is where I will retire.
