Grandma's Apron
Roger Belton

When I think of my dear Grandma, the first thing that I see
Is her ever-present apron, reaching almost to her knee.
It was as much a part of her as either dress or shoes,
And she'd sooner be without both, than her apron ever loose.
It served so many functions during her busy day.
Whatever chores she had to do, the apron had a part to play.
She used it as a safety glove, to grab hot pots or pans,
And when the kitchen was too hot, it became the best of fans.
It served as a carry-all for veggies, fruit, and such,
And it became a lethal weapon when flies annoyed too much.
She used it as a hanky to wipe away a small child's tear,
And as a handy dusting cloth when unexpected company drew near.
She used it as a signal flag when Grandfather was busy with chores,
To let him know that lunch was ready, or just to call him indoors.
She laid it aside only grudgingly, when to church or to town she'd go.
And, without it how odd she looked…not the Grandma I'd come to know.
But, being without it was only an occasional, short-lived event,
For the instant she arrived back home, around her waist that apron went.
